The Zwaanschild apartment building was erected in the early 1990s, on the grounds that used to belong to the university hospital. The hospital however, had become a small village in itself with all its different buildings. When it needed to grow even larger, it was moved to a different location, the current UMC Utrecht Hospital at De Uithof. The vast area that was left behind was given a new life, mainly as a new residential area by the name of Hoogh Boulant. With some of the historic buildings remaining, the area is now a fusion of old and new, while many extra plants and trees were added to balance nature and urbanization.
